No Cost To Participating Businesses That Serve As Worksites
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Jan. 14, 2019 – CareerSource Broward (CSBD) is currently seeking Broward County employers who are interested in serving as a worksite for this year’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Businesses can hire a young adult at NO COST for the eight-week summer program, as both the Children's Services Council of Broward County and CSBD will cover the wages and associated program costs – a savings of nearly $3,000 per each youth hired.
SYEP, a program of CSBD and primarily funded by the Children’s Services Council of Broward County, provides students between the ages of 16 and 18 with paid summer employment between June and August. Selected youth work in a variety of clerical and assistant or aide roles with government agencies, libraries, community organizations, for-profits, nonprofits and more. Prior to their first day of work, each youth will complete a three-day, paid employability skills training that focuses on job-readiness skills, professionalism and workplace expectations.
"Summer jobs are very important for youth entering the workforce,” said Cindy Arenberg Seltzer, President/CEO of the Children's Services Council of Broward County. “These jobs provide the chance to teach some of the most crucial soft skills needed in the workplace, like communication, accountability and professionalism. SYEP gives these youth – many of whom have never held a job before – the opportunity to learn about the dignity of earning a paycheck, build a resume and explore viable career options.”
Worksites for the program are selected on a first-come, first-served basis and will be chosen based on the career interests of the students. Participating students will earn a wage of $8.46 and can work up to 30 hours per week. The program begins June 10.
"Creating and developing a steady pipeline of workforce talent continues to be a major priority for businesses all across South Florida,” said Mason C. Jackson, President/CEO of CareerSource Broward. “By participating in SYEP, employers not only get an extra set of hands for the summer, but they also receive fresh ideas from some of Broward County’s brightest students that can help boost productivity and, in some cases, improve a company’s bottom line.”
